About Us
Guerrera Films is an independent production company founded by filmmaker sisters, Sheena and Sonum Sumaria. We use the moving image as a tool for resistance and social justice, amplifying the stories of those on the margins. Through creative and emotive film, we aim to confront power structures and promote a world built on freedom, empathy, and collective truth.
Sheena Sumaria
Co-Founder & Director
Sheena is a British-Gujarati documentary filmmaker and co-founder of Guerrera Films. Her academic background is in Economics and Development Studies from Cambridge and SOAS, and she moved from international development work into filmmaking out of a commitment to social justice causes.
Her credits include "Still Standing", about life in Medellin’s slums, and "Chile: Building Dreams", about the Chilean student uprising. Her debut feature, "Even the Crows: A Divided Gujarat", co-directed with her sister Sonum, examines the lasting divisions left by the 2002 Gujarat pogrom.
Her latest feature, "The Fisherman and the Banker", covers a fishing community’s decade-long fight against the World Bank Group in Gujarat, and has screened at festivals and cinemas across the UK.
Sonum Sumaria
Co-Founder & Director
Sonum is an award-winning filmmaker with thirteen years of experience making documentaries alongside marginalized communities. She studied Spanish and Russian at Cambridge University, trained at the Cuban film school EICTV, and later earned an MA in Cinematography at MetFilm School in London.
Her credits include "In the Shadows of Moscow", exploring xenophobia in Moscow, and the short film "Goppi, The Cuban Indian", on identity and belonging in Havana.
Her latest feature, "Under the Open Sky", follows a nomadic camel-herding family in Western India confronting the pressures of modernization.
Our Work
We produce work for NGOs, campaigns, and educational and artistic clients, covering topics like race, identity, minority rights, climate, homelessness, health, and education. Past clients include 38 Degrees, Hispan TV, Trinity College, ClientEarth, the Roma Support Group, the Ecumenical Forum of European Christian Women, the Mehar Baba Charitable Trust, and Pop Brixton Reprezent Radio.
